Seattle masonry The Do's And Don'ts Of Drilling In Concrete, Masonry And Stone - Part Two

    And now the Don'ts

When drilling in concrete there are a few Don'ts that are beneficial to heed.

It becomes extremely expensive to use a bit that is longer than the hole you need to drill. When you do this you run the risk of breaking the bit or leaving two thirds of a bit unused when only half the way through your job.

Don't use too much force. Drilling will not go faster with your additional push, let the weight of the hammer do the work. However, removing dust and debris from the hole can increase drilling speed. To do this pull the bit straight out of the hole every two to three inches. Clearing the swarf (debris) will also increase your bit's longevity and decrease your chance of jamming your bit in the hole.

Dont lean on bits while drilling. Keep the bit pointed in the same direction once you get started. All it takes is a little distraction, a lean one way, and snap-pow. Theres thirty bucks down the drain. Then you have to figure out how to get whats left of the bit out of the hole.

Fro horizontal drilling, don't go bigger. Use a smaller hammer, even if it takes more time, so you can keep the bit going in the same direction and avoid breaking the bit.

Don't over extend your bits. Use a smaller bit to get a job started and then finish with a long bit. Other wise you risk breaking your hundred dollar bit as the debris and swarf build up in the hole.

Don't pinch your pennies for a cheaper made bit. Heavy research and investment is primary for production of top quality brand bits. Brands such as Prestline Brand use only the best steel to produce top quality bits unlike the cheaper brands who use cheap labor and materials.

Seattle masonry Tools in Concrete Polishing

Concrete Polishing is a modern method that involves grinding the concrete surface until reaches a point of certain smoothness. The smooth concrete surface then needs to be polished and coated with a sealant thus exhibiting a smooth and shiny surface. A colorant or dye can also be added in order to achieve a desired color effect or design. There are indeed countless possibilities in working with concrete.

There are actually a lot of tools essential for a successful concrete polishing. These tools are always present in a concrete contractors toolkit as they all serve individual uses depending on their purposes. One such kind of tool is the concrete grinder. Concrete grinders grind the rough concrete surface prior to polishing and epoxy coating.

Concrete grinders have interchangeable discs that are used depending on the process of application. Some discs have diamond abrasive stuck onto a metallic or plastic matting/ backing which thoroughly grinds down the surface of concrete. This disc is usually used for first application after which a finer disc is use to smoothen the surface until a fine surface is achieved. After the grinding process a sealant or epoxy coating is usually added onto the surface to achieve the luster.

Before the actual concrete polishing the surface needs to be cleaned and thoroughly prepared. Dirt, dust and stains should be removed as well as any loose aggregates, chippings or cracks. Power washers are often recommended as a cleaning tool as they effectively wash out dirt and stain through the high pressurized water coming out of the nozzle. Some power washers blast a mixture of water and san particles to the concrete.

Concrete grinders are also used to remove surface dirt and debris and to remove loose aggregates and chippings as well that does not invite polishing. Concrete grinding is also used to strip off a few millimeters from the concrete surface so that the aggregates are exposed from within. Exposed aggregates can be very good decorative element as they are usually topped off with hardeners, sealers and epoxy coatings to shine. This in turn will leave the concrete with a nice marble-like appearance.

Seattle masonry The Do's And Don'ts of Masonry Drilling

    Part I Dos

When drilling in concrete, stone and masonry heed the following hints.

First, choose right tool for the job. Either a rotary hammer or a hammer drill with the power necessary. Check the manufacturer's rate capacity in product literature and use a hammer with twice the capacity of the size hole you are drilling.

Make appropriate sized holes; don't waste time on bigger holes. The bigger the holes, the more time and wear and tear of the drill.

Long bits are expensive, use a bit that is no longer than necessary.

There is one exception to the above Do. When vertical drilling through slabs that need no more than a 10 inch bit, most people want to go longer if there are many holes to drill. The reason is the stress on the back. Workmen compensation claims for the backache can also raise the cost per hole.

Next, use a one piece bit for speed. There are a variety of adapters that go into the hammers to enable the user to save money on bits. Taper adapters, SDS adapters and threaded adapters are available. When a tapered bit wears out, one only has to replace the drilling part of the bit, which saves money. Studies have shown that there is a loss of drilling efficiency when using an adapter. A one piece bit transfers all of the energy from the hammer to the tip of the drill bit, which results in greater speed.

A very important safety DO is to check for the presence of pipes, and conduit (both metal and PVC) before you begin to make holes. This can sometimes be difficult, but every attempt must be made to locate these lines. One can only imagine the headache and cost of penetrating a natural gas line, a water line, or electrical conduit.

You can locate a line with a metal detector if the lines are metal. Or by using a tool interrupter which stops a hammer when nearing contact with metal.

To top it off, use high quality bits with better speed and longevity. Prestline brand bits are among the industry leaders.

Seattle masonry Gizmos and Gadgets for Concrete Polishing

Concrete Polishing as a method requires tools to be able to achieve successfully. Looking inside a concrete polishers toolbox one is faced with different gadgets and materials, some of them are common household tools. Surely, there are tools needed for every application there is in concrete polishing.

One such example of a concrete polishing tool is the concrete grinder. The concrete grinder is perhaps the most important and repeatedly used tool in concrete polishing. Concrete grinders are used for concrete resurfacing, concrete polishing, concrete stamping and decorating and in concrete cleaning. Grinders are effective cleaning agents as they easily grind surface stains and deep down dirt.

Another common tool in concrete polishing is the trowel. A trowel is used to spread out cement or concrete in final applications. The trowel is a handy tool that makes it possible for the surface to achieve a uniform depth all the time. Another tool that is used is the squeegee. A squeegee is often used to wipe out excess water from the surface during concrete hardening period. This always ensures that no water is left from the surface.

During the concrete grinding process dust tend to settle into the surface which may prove harmful to the health when inhaled. The solution to this is to use an eye and face protector during grinding process. Eye and face protector is a transparent plastic shield that covers the face from dust and any other foreign elements from hitting the face. This may prove healthy and a must-have in a concrete polishers toolbox.

Power washers are also used in concrete polishing. These are composed of pressurized water coming out of a nozzle. Power washers are used to clean the concrete of simple dust to stubborn grease and oil stains. Some power washers have a mixture of sand and water coming out of the pressurized nozzle. This was somehow proven to damage the concrete surface.
